Lo dije el 16 de Julio pasado

Julio 30, 2008

Cuauhtemoc Blanco leads MLS stars to beat English Team

July 23, 2008

Chicago Fire midfielder named MVP in All-Star triumph

A penalty kick goal from hometown hero Dwayne De Rosario in the 69th minute proved to be the difference in an exciting 3-2 victory for the MLS All-Stars against West Ham United in the 13th annual Pepsi Major League Soccer All-Star Game. The victory was the MLS side's fourth in a row over international competition and improved their record to a perfect 5-0 overall since the MLS vs. the World format was first adopted in 2003. It also gives MLS a hat trick against London-based teams, as the All-Stars defeated Fulham and Chelsea in 2005 and 2006.
After Dean Ashton gave the English Premier League side a 26th-minute lead, Christian Gomez equalized not a minute later, set up by a terrific backheel from Cuauhtemoc Blanco. Blanco then put the MLS All-Stars ahead with a great goal of his own just before halftime, but Ashton brought West Ham on even terms again in the 67th minute, three minutes before De Rosario's spot kick provided the victory.

Blanco, the Chicago Fire's playmaker, was named the Volkswagen All-Star Game MVP, with a goal and an assist on the night.

The sold-out BMO Field crowd lived up to its boisterous reputation, though perhaps not in the way that MLS fans might imagine. There were a fair amount of support for West Ham and booing of some of the All-Stars from Toronto FC's divisional rivals like Hejduk and Blanco. Even Beckham, making his Toronto debut, received a bit of BMO's trademark streamer shower when the midfielder went to take a corner kick. Chants of 'We Want Brennan!' in support of the insertion of TFC's lone All-Star rep, Canadian defender Jim Brennan, began roughly a minute into the game and continued throughout the first half.
After a quiet start, the game sprung to life in the 26th minute thanks to Ashton. Midfielder Julian Faubert's header sprung the forward loose downfield, and Ashton launched a hard, angled shot that sailed past goakeeper Matt Reis. It was a quality strike for West Ham's scoring leader in 2007-08, and an example of why Ashton recently received his first international cap for England.
It marked the first time that an international side had ever held a lead over the MLS All-Stars, and the first time in 260 minutes the MLS side had been scored upon in All-Star competition. But West Ham's triumph was short lived.
Just a minute after Ashton's score, the All-Stars moved the ball downfield and Beckham made an forward pass to Blanco. The Mexican internatioanl quickly delivered a pass of his own, a brilliant backheel that found an unmarked Gomez. The Colorado Rapids midfielder, who has three goals this season, took an angled shot that just caught the left side of the net to equalize the score for MLS.
Gomez's goal seemed to invigorate the All-Stars, who began to attack the West Ham defense with more vigor. A goal nearly came off of another quality pass from Blanco, as the Mexican superstar delivered an expert cross in the 33rd minute that found fellow striker Kenny Cooper on the right side of the Hammers net. The FC Dallas star mistimed his header, however, putting the ball right of the net.
In the 40th minute, a direct free kick from David Beckham snaked its way towards the West Ham goal. Hammers defender Calum Davenport was in position to clear the ball and deny Beckham one of his patented set-piece goals.
The MLS team finally broke through with another goal courtesy of Blanco, who was wreaking havoc on the left side of the park. Blanco took a pass from Dallas' Juan Toja on the left side, made a few steps to create some space from his defender and then stopped and launched a curving right-footed shot that flew into the upper right-hand corner of the net.
The Blanco show came to an end at the half, as Blanco and Cooper strike force was substituted for Landon Donovan and Juan Pablo Angel, the MVPs of the 2001 and 2007 MLS All-Star Games, respectively.
West Ham, meanwhile, made a halftime substitution of their own, inserting Luis Boa Morte in place of midfielder Matthew Etherington. Portuguese international Boa Morte, who played for Fulham in the 2005 contest, became the first player to ever appear in two All-Star Games against the MLS side. Boa Morte nearly celebrated his achievement with a goal, as his free kick in the 53rd minute required a canny save on the right side from Reis.
The New England goalkeeper had to make an even bigger save a few minutes later. In the aftermath of a Davenport corner, the ball was played back and then crossed in front of the net to Faubert. The former French international delivered a strong header that Reis was there to stop at point-blank range.
In the midst of the substitutions, however, the Hammers tied the game. In the 67th minute, Boa Morte passed back to an unmarked Ashton just outside of the penalty area. The forward launched a shot that deflected off the back of defender Jimmy Conrad and wrongfooted Reis as it curled into the side of the net. Ashton's brace marked the first time that an international team scored more than one goal against MLS in an All-Star Game.
As with West Ham's first goal, however, it didn't take long for the All-Stars to respond. Just a minute after Ashton's strike, West Ham captain Lucas Neill hauled down De Rosario as he tried to burst through on the left side of the penalty area and the MLS side was awarded a penalty kick by referee Mauricio Navarro. De Rosario took the kick himself, and took a shot that rattled off the underside of the crossbar, but still bounced down then back up into the roof of the goal.

The MLS schedule resumes on Sunday with four games. West Ham will head back to England to resume their preseason training in preparation for their Premiership season opener against Wigan on August 16.

MLS All-Star First XI announced

Julio 10, 2008

Team includes five debutants, six returnees
Major League Soccer Communications
Major League Soccer Deputy Commissioner Ivan Gazidis unveiled the MLS All-Star First XI today in Toronto and among the group are five first-time All-Stars and six players with previous MLS All-Star experience. The First XI received the most votes at their respective positions from four groups - fans, players, media and coaches/general managers. Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan led all players in combined voting, followed closely by teammate David Beckham and Chicago Fire playmaker Cuauhtémoc Blanco.
The MLS All-Stars will take on historic English Premier League club West Ham United in the 2008 Pepsi MLS All-Star Game on Thursday, July 24 at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada. The game will be televised live on ESPN, Telefutura, and CBC Sports at 7 p.m. ET.
The New England Revolution currently hold the best record in MLS (10-4-3, 33 pts) and led all teams with three players voted to the First XI -- defender Michael Parkhurst, midfielder Shalrie Joseph and goalkeeper Matt Reis. The Los Angeles Galaxy and Columbus Crew each had two players make the First XI, while the Chicago Fire, Chivas USA, FC Dallas and Kansas City Wizards each had one player named.
The First XI is anchored in the net by Reis, who was selected for his fourth consecutive MLS All-Star Game. An experienced back line features Kansas City Wizards defender Jimmy Conrad (five-time All-Star), the Columbus Crew's Frankie Hejduk (six) and Parkhurst (three).
The midfield will feature some of the League's most experienced players and two rising stars. Beckham (England), Blanco (Mexico) and Joseph (Grenada) are joined by Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan and Columbus Crew midfielder Robbie Rogers.
The First XI front line features two of the League's top goal scorers in Donovan (11 goals) and FC Dallas forward Kenny Cooper (8 goals). Donovan's 11 goals rank first, while Cooper's eight goals rank fourth in the League's scoring race.
The First XI is reflective of Major League Soccer's diverse player pool. Ranging in age from 21 (Robbie Rogers) to 35 (Cuauhtémoc Blanco), this group brings an array of experience both domestically and abroad. Three players born outside of the United States and Canada are among the 11, each having captained their respective country's national team - Beckham (102 caps with England), Blanco (97 caps with Mexico), and Joseph (Grenada).
Online fan balloting comprising 25 percent of the combined First XI vote, with MLS coaches and GMs (25 percent), media (25 percent), and players (25 percent) accounting for the remainder. Players and coaches/general managers could not register votes for players on their own teams. A chart below shows 20 of the top vote-getters, with the percentage of ballots within each voting group for each player.
On July 15, Revolution head coach Steve Nicol and his staff will select five additional All-Stars, who will join two Commissioner selections to complete 18-man game-day MLS roster. Nicol earned the honor of coaching the MLS side by leading his team to the highest points per game average in the League through games on June 29.
The First XI is not necessarily the starting lineup. Nicol will select the starters based on player availability and tactical considerations. If First XI selections are unavailable due to injury, international duty or other commitments, Nicol will select alternates for the game day roster, but all First XI players are All-Stars. The First XI selections are below:

Argentina se alista para ir a Beijin

Julio 3, 2008

Defensores: Pablo Zabaleta (Espanyol), Luciano Monzon (Boca Juniors), Ezequiel Garay (Madrid Real), Nicolás Burdisso (Entierre Milan), Federico Fazio (Sevilla), Lautaro Acosta (Sevilla)

Midfielders: Fernando Gago (Madrid Real), Juan Roman Riquelme (Boca Juniors), Ever Banega (Valencia), Javier Mascherano (Liverpool), José Sosa (Bayern Munich)

Adelante: Diego Buonanotte (River Plate), Sergio Aguero (Atletico Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli), Ángel Di María (Benfica).

Argentina es muy fuerte y del equipo que llevarán a China todos juegan en Europa o en un equipo grande de Argentina. Va a ser un principal candidato a ganar la medalla de oro.
