Fredy Montero, Seattle's Colombian striker announced his presence with a two goals and an assist Thursday night, as Seattle Sounders FC got their inaugural campaign off to a smashing start with a thorough 3-0 thrashing of the New York Red Bulls at a sold-out Qwest Field in First Kick 2009.
The 21-year-old Montero, who was signed on loan from Colombian club Deportivo Cali, showed why he has led the Colombian first division in scoring for two consecutive seasons by controlling the game from his striker position. He also outshone his Colombian counterpart, New York's Juan Pablo Angel, who failed to have an impact on the game.
Montero opened his account in the 12th minute. After some crafty footwork from strike partner Nate Jaqua to keep the possession alive, the ball made it to Sebastien Le Toux at the top of the box, who kept the ball moving to Montero. After a calm touch, Montero's targeted low drive beat Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero at his far post.
Meanwhile, New York's offense failed to gain any traction. With the exception of two free kicks from just outside the area, Seattle's defense did well to limit New York's chances in the first half.
In the 69th minute, Macoumba Kandji bullied his way through James Riley and had an open chance on net, but his drive was parried away by Kasey Keller in the goalkeeper's first real action of the match. Two minutes later, Keller had to leave his feet to punch Jorge Rojas' volley over the bar.
In the 75th minute, Montero sealed the outcome with a superb piece of individual skill. After picking Mike Petke's pocket 40 yards from goal, he headed towards Cepero. His calm was never more evident as he coolly finished the breakaway with a high shot to the 'keeper's near post.
With the game secure, the capacity crowd started to cheer lustily, giving the Colombian the ovation he deserved when he was substituted for in the waning moments. In all, it was a dominating performance in the club's first match and a superb debut from Montero.
